Ellen Pompeo's House

Elle Decor featured Ellen Pompeo's house earlier this year.  It is a Mediterranean house like mine and so I often I go to it for inspiration.  The house is a bit more boho chic than I care for, I think it is a beautiful house.

I love the contrast of the dark wood behind the white upholstered chairs.  I also like the pops of pink.

I like the pendants over the dining table.  My dining room table looks a lot like this one so am considering installing 2 or 3 pendants in the dining room like in the picture:

I like the open cabinets of her kitchen and I love the floor.

The living room is a little too boho/anthropology professor like for my tastes, but I like how they set up the art work.

I love the Moroccan screen and pendant in the hallway.  I love the staircase too.

The architectural details - those windows & the ceiling beams coupled with the high ceilings - are gorgeous.

Scentsational Home

I love burning scented candles in my home.  In fact, I am a bit of a candle connoisseur.  I have two all-time favorites candles:

For Spring, Summer and Fall, I burn diptyque baies-candle:

It smells like roses and blackcurrants, yet it also has a green/leafy scent.

In the Winter, it's the diptyque feu-de-bois-candle:

This is my #1 favorite candle of all time.  It reminds me of some very special moments in my life and just thinking about it makes me nostalgic.  It smells like firewood.

These are luxuries though and I can't afford to burn them every day.  So for every day use, I am quite fond of the Votivo red currant candle:

It has a bright berry scent, but with layers of vanilla (or maybe cream?).  It's lovely.

Last night, a friend of mine gave me an awesome gift which I predict will become an all-time favorite. It's not a candle it is an atmosphere spray from Demeter:

We traveled together to New Zealand and everywhere we went, we noticed how amazing the air smelled.  Fresh and green with floral notes.  This spray takes me back there.  LOVE IT!

I like spending the time to make my home beautiful and special.  Even when it's just me and the dog at home, I light a candle and let my home take on that coziness that comes from a small flickering light.

Musical Chairs

I am on the hunt for accent chairs and there are so many pretty chairs to choose from!!
Above is a chair from WS Home.  I love bright white cushions against the dark wood.

Also from WS Home - the Chelsea Wing Chair

It can be covered in 100 different fabrics and it has nailhead trim.  The picture above shows that chair in persimmon velvet.  Love!

From Horchow:

I like that it has an unusual design paired with
neutral upholstery.  But maybe a bit too ... weird.

This chair looks sooooo comfy. I love the print!

I absolutely love Jonathan Adler's bamboo chair.

Silk stripes - so elegant and pretty.

Texas Challenge

Today's post is looooooong.

Decorating my living room in my Texas home has been a big challenge.  My preferred color palette includes grays, whites, blacks, pops of bright color here & there and touches of polished nickel (for some sparkle!).  Unfortunately that color palette would not work on the first floor of my Texas home because (other than the bedrooms) it is an open floor plan and the floors are terracotta.  It's a Spanish/Mediterranean house, so the terracotta floors go perfectly with the style of the house, but not with my ideal color palette.

Here are two pictures of the living room as decorated by the prior owners:

You can see how well shades of chocolate brown and gold go with the floors and the walls.  They added a lot of dark woods, wrought iron and leather.  It is lovely and the decor goes very well with the house - it's just not me.

The house is also flooded with a lot of natural light, which I love.  This causes the wall color to change as the day progresses from a pale yellow, to beige, to camel.

It has been a slow process finding things I like, that coordinate with the room and that coordinate with each other.  It would be very easy to buy dark furniture and decorate with golds and burgundies (typical Tuscan decor for example), but that just would not be reflection of me.

This is what I have so far:

A large seagrass rug to anchor the living room.  I wanted to add some natural texture to the room and seagrass & terracotta are a match made in heaven.  I want the room to feel relaxed and breezy so I opted for this instead of a traditional rug.  Also, seagrass rugs are much more affordable than traditional wool rugs.

Next, I added an English roll arm linen sofa in espresso.  I love the look and feel of linen.  The sofa has very elegant lines and yet is super comfy.  You can lounge comfortably in it.  I like that it can easily and comfortably seat 3 people.  Linen and seagrass = love.  Breezy and relaxed.

Then I bought two slipper chairs (on clearance!) in a beautiful, bright chinoiserie print.  The chairs were on sale, so I saved some money.

They add some much needed color and pattern to the room.  The best part though is that they are slipcovered. If the fabric gets dirty, I can throw the covers in the washing machine.  If after a few years I decide to change, I can buy two new slipcovers for a fraction of the price of replacing the entire chair. The slipcovers are cotton with the look of linen.

I am not a fan of decorating around a television and even contemplated not adding one in the living room. But to be realistic - my family loves television.  I have been known to love it from time to time too ...  so I bought this simple stand from Pottery Barn.

I like that it has glass doors on the sides.  I can add  ceramics or bowls to add color and interest.  Eventually, I intend to replace the stand with a full cabinet - the kind that completely hides the television until you are ready to watch it.  The walls are very high and there is space for that - unfortunately, there is no room in my budget for that right now.

I want to avoid having my home look too traditional and the above items are very traditional.  I want the house to have a blend of traditional and modern elements.  I bought these nickel, mirrored top nesting side table (on clearance!) to place on either side of the sofa.  This adds a touch of sparkle.  I haven't seen these tables set in the living room yet, so the verdict is still out on whether they will work.  My fingers are crossed!

Here is what I have in mind for my next purchases that will hopefully complete the room. Because the living room opens up to the dining room, see below, I want to add furniture that connects the two rooms.

I think I would like to add a bench between the two rooms, where that lone chair sits in the picture. Something like this:

I like that it has a traditional tufted cushion, but with modern lines.  I would want it to be covered in some type of heavy duty velvet.  The sofa and slipper chairs are linen.  The large rug is seagrass, I think adding some velvet would add a nice contrast of texture.  I like that people could face either the dining room or the living room.   Or curl up on it for a nap.

I also want to add a small flat woven rug on top of the seagrass rug right under the coffee table to add some interest and to further anchor the area in front of the sofa.

And then I want to place an accent chair against the wall next to the patio doors. I want to play off the colors in the slipper chairs.  Maybe something like this:

Window treatments - I think I am leaning toward a grommet top in a white linen.  The grommet top adds some contemporary touches (versus a pleated drapery panel).

Some potential accessories:

Next time I am in Texas I will take current pictures and make some decisions.  Actually - the biggest challenge of all has been decorating long distance.  Oy vei - what a headache that's been.  But I know in the end it will be well worth it.

Royal Wedding

I can't wait to see Prince William's wedding on television. I assume it will be televised - like Princess Diana's was in the 80's. All I want to know is what wine they will serve at the reception and see how they decorate the reception site.  Also, I think I need to start wearing hats.  Who's with me?

House Tour

I have been following the blog Knight Moves for about a year.  The woman who runs the blog has amazing tastes and her own house is gorgeous.  A different blogger, La Dolce Vita, featured a house tour of the Knight Moves house here.  A couple of pictures below.

I like the neutral grays and creams with occasional pops of orange.

I like the chandelier above the bed and the symmetry flanking the bed.  And that bed - so luxurious!

What I like about the house tour is that they tell you where some items were purchased! And its a real mix of high end and bargain priced items.

I would love to use the same cool color palette above in my Texas home.  Unfortunately, it doesn't work because my house has terra cotta floors and chocolate brown carpeting on the stairs.  I am sure it's possible to keep the color palette cool if I were to stick with lots of whites in my house.  But it would be very hard to maintain clean.  What I can do is take some of the elements from the above house tour and use them for inspiration here and there. Yay!!

Living Rooms

My heart is not into this  today, so I will just post a few inspirational pictures of some lovely living rooms.  They are all from Elle Decor.

First is the living room of a  beach house:

Gorgeous chair and love the accent pillow.

 The patio doors open completely.

The second is a living room designed by Candice Olson.  This is my favorite color palette.

Finally, also from Elle Decor is Megan Mullaly's living room featured in last month's issue. I love the graphic print on the rug combined with the white upholstery.

I love the large black & white photo anchored above the sofa. Also am crazy about the chocolate velvet sofa.

Sadness

Last night one of my friends in Texas died in a car accident.  She was on her way home after a full day at work.

I feel a tremendous sadness knowing the world has lost a woman with a heart of gold.  Ana always went out of her way to be gracious with me and my mom.  When she found something funny she would let out this very loud, very hearty laugh - it was contagious.  She was a skilled hair stylist and would often give my mom and grandmother makeovers because she thought every woman should feel pretty.

Last May we had a big family event and I made a song request to the DJ.  Turns out he didn't have the song in his music library, but Ana would not give up that easily.  She downloaded the song on her iphone, emailed it to the DJ, he then in turn downloaded it into his system and played it.   I don't even remember what song it was - all I remember is that Ana had the firm resolve that if one is craving to dance to a particular song, then one should find a way to make it happen.

My heart aches for her children - especially for her young daughter that is expecting a baby in a few months.  I could never find the words to express my sorrow and grief to them.

May all your angels surround you, Ana, and help guide you toward peace.  I will always hold your laugh in my heart.

Catalog Saturdays

I saw this great mirror (which happens to look exactly like a mirror at WS Home for much more money) at a blog called Copy Cat Chic.  I love her blog - she always has great copy cat designs of high end things for a fraction of the price.

Decorative 38" Iron Ring Starburst Wall Mirror  for $62.40 at QVC.

I love this acrylic easel stand from CB2.  Perfect for displaying art work in an empty corner without adding too much clutter.

The Acrylic Tripod Easel at CB2 is priced at $179.  I may buy this for a corner in my living room.

Also at CB2 is this placemat for two.  It drapes across the dining table and serves as a placemat for two people seated across from each other.

Here is another picture of the placemat.

Finally, I love all the pillows at Dwell Studio.  Here are some of my favorites (the best part is that they are all reasonably priced:

Virginia Wine Country

I celebrated my birthday last month by visiting my law school bestie at her home in Virginia.  She's a top-notch family lawyer in D.C. (yes I brag about my friends - sue me). We spent one afternoon in Virginia wine country.  First of all, I did not know that Virginia had a prominent wine region and second of all, I had no idea it would be so beautiful.

We were blessed with a perfect Autumn day. Sunny and toasty, but with a chilly breeze every now and then.  My bestie, her friend and I hopped in a car and took the hour drive to Breaux Vineyards.

As you can see below, the scenery is beautiful.  There are rolling hills and meadows everywhere.  I highly recommend a weekend trip to the area. I learned that the wine most made in the Virginia wine region is Viognier.

That's me! :)

We arrived at Breaux, decided to skip the tasting and have lunch instead.  The ladies and I took a seat at this lovely spot and enjoyed a delicious picnic of french bread, cheese and a heavenly sun dried tomato spread (or was it roasted peppers?).  Soooo good.

With our picnic, we drank a bottle of Viognier from Breaux - it was absolutely lovely.  Lush and peachy, but it wasn't a fruit bomb. Richer than a sauvignon blanc, but without the oakiness of a chardonnay.  Perfect with our picnic.

It's hard to find Virginia wines outside the state, but you can order directly from Breaux's website.

Viognier is a nice substitute for chardonnay - especially for folks that don't like oak-y chardonnays.  There are some nice California and Chilean Viogniers (which I will save for another post) that are easier to find than its Virginia cousins.

Food Pair: Viognier is best paired with seafood (especially seafood prepared in cream based sauces) and cheese.  I was also told that it goes perfectly with spicy Indian and Thai food.

Nifty tip: to test the aromatic intensity of a Viognier, pour some in a wine glass, drink it (of course!) and then sniff the empty glass. Viognier will often leave it's aromatic bouquet on a glass after you've finished the wine.  Usually you will find intense fruit notes and a floral-like aroma. Lovely.

Extra nifty tip: Viognier from France goes by the name of the sub-region in which it grows: Condrieu.
