French Malbec

I am so excited - today's post is in response to my first reader request!  Woo hoo!  Even though I know it's just my two friends A and Penguin reading this blog and making requests, it still makes me happy :)

Let's get to it!

Most people know that Argentina produces a lot of Malbec wine,  but few know that France also produces some lovely Malbecs.   In fact at one point in time France was a major producer of this wine, but over the years its production has declined.  That is mostly because other wine varieties gained tremendous popularity, but also due to the sensitivity of Malbec grapes to weather conditions.

My favorite French Malbce is Château Hauts de Serres

I love this Malbec!!  This wine is grown in the southwest region of France.  It has an intensely dark color, notes of ripe berries and a spicy aroma.  This is a very full-bodied wine.  It is BOLD.  Goes best with food, but it's not so edgy that you couldn't enjoy a glass on its own.  It retails for about $22-$23 a bottle (expect to pay double if you order it at a restaurant).

Food Pairing: grilled steak (excellent with a hearty plate of steak frites), mushrooms, hearty sauces, and cheese.  Personally, I love to drink this while eating buttery escargot and French bread.

Nifty tip: Look for "Cahors" on the wine label as a French label likely won't say "Malbec." Cahors is the sub-region of France that most produces Malbec wine.

What do you think or Rioja ? Not sure if that is a name, a region, or what. I had a lovely glass last night at Gramercy Tavern and now I can't remember the name of it.

LOL!! Rioja is the wine most produced in Spain. Every time you and I have been to a Spanish restaurant we've had Rioja. :) Pretty sure you would have seen it everywhere while in Spain. I had a great one last weekend and can review that next.
